Illuminated engraving by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr for Johann Baptist Homann, Nuremberg, 1742.
“Phaenomena Motuum Irregularium quos Planetae Venus et Mercurius ad annum Salutis MDCCX”.
Diagram illustrating the speed of the Earth, Venus and Mercury to go around the sun. Earth took the entire year 1710, Venus eight months and Mercury three. An allegorical vignette depicts the sun as a ball with a woman sitting astride it; Earth is a woman in a carriage with four puttis, drawn by a team of six horses; Venus is in a shell-shaped chariot pulled by two swans, and Mercury uses his winged heels to race forward.
